Egg shells for the garden

Eggs are great for many the garden and compost. A few years ago – before the kitchen was redone, I tried this and it worked great. I even still had the labeled jar on a shelf!

I came across an article that reminded me that crushed egg shells in the actual plants helped add calcium. So i put out a way paper and started collecting them again.

I found 2 different recipes – one suggested a longer time at a lower temp, the other higher temp for a shorter time.

egg shells for the garden
  • Bake the eggshells to kill any potential bacteria including salmonella.
  • Preheat oven to 400°F
  • Bake your eggshells on a baking sheet for 10 minutes.
  • This kills bacteria, and also make the shells more brittle and easier to crush into small pieces
  • After shells are baked, place in blender and crush to a nice small size.

Verdict:

This is a great way to get shells in a good size to help the garden.
